When you hear the word discrimination immediately, it gets clear that we are talking about one bad phenomenon practiced by many people. But when we talk about employment discrimination things are getting even more serious, when it comes to earning a living for yourself and your family, employment discrimination is particularly dangerous. Unfortunately, this is still problematic because of the people who think that the society is built for people with one gender, one race, one religion or one level of ability.

Discrimination and harassment in the workplace can come in many forms, and although such misconduct can sometimes be overt, it can be subtle or even concealed. No one should have the right to deny another person a job or to harass someone on the job because of age, race, gender, sexual orientation, religion or disability.

How to Recognize Employment discrimination?

Here are some actions that are signs of employment discrimination’s in the workplace:

  • Firing an employee.Employment discrimination
  • Not giving an employee legal entitlements such as pay or leave when the employee is injured in the workplace.
  • Treating an employee differently than others.
  • Not hiring someone.
  • Offering a potential employee different and unfair terms and conditions for the job compared to other employees.

These actions are called adverse actions and are a clear sign when the employer is discriminating the employee.

There are various types of employment discrimination prohibited by the law, some of them are:

  • Sexual Orientation Discrimination. Sexual orientation discrimination refers to harassment or differential treatment based on someone’s perceived or actual gay, lesbian, bi-sexual, or heterosexual orientation.
  • Race Discrimination. Many employees still face everyday discrimination because of the color of their skin, although you may think that this remained in the past, there are still people who are facing these problems every day. Racial discrimination can often be subtle and more difficult to detect, such as an employer’s failure to hire or promote an individual on account of their race
  • Age Discrimination. This discrimination can be used on both older and youthful people. The Equality Act 2010 makes it unlawful to discriminate against employees, job seekers and trainees because of their age.
  • Disability Discrimination. If an employee or potential employee is capable of performing a task, they should not be treated differently from any other person also capable of performing that task because of their disability.
  • Pregnancy Discrimination. Pregnancy Discrimination happen when an employer treats differently or unfavorably a female employee because of pregnancy or childbirth.
  • National Origin Discrimination. Unfortunately, employers sometimes make hiring, firing, promotion, and compensation decisions based on an employee’s national origin.
  • Religious Discrimination. As long as the work is done correctly and there are no difficulties based on the religion an employee is free to believe in what he or she chooses.

So if you feel you have been wrongfully fired or discriminated against because of your age, race or sex orientation you should definitely see and speak with a lawyer as soon as possible. A good lawyer will help you, get you into the discrimination law and protect you.
